This movie's plot basis is around Dave Skylark (James Franco) as an interviewer to many famous people and their problems. I would probably compare it to another late night show that interviews celebrities and their problems or who got a "new boob job" as stated in the movie. The main producer to the show, "Skylark Tonight," is Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogan). Together, after realizing that their show could be interviewing bigger and better people, they book an interview with Kim Jong Un, the dictator of North Korea. They also find out that Un is a big fan of "Skylark Tonight," which helps them get the interview. The CIA found their interview to be very beneficial for them because they are the only ones that will have direct contact with Un. The CIA wants them to kill Kim Jong Un to get rid of the brutal dictator in the communist country. With a ton of close calls and jokes along the way, their time in North Korea is action packed. SPOILER ALERT The tag team do end up killing Kim Jong Un, but not the way the CIA instructed them to do. I would relate this plot to "Pineapple Express" because it always ends up alright for everyone as it does in both movies. Also even the friends that abandoned each other earlier in the movie, meet back up in the end to win together.

The movie conforms with most aspects of cinematic elements. Something that stood out to me is how they portrayed many things in North Korea. The castle that Un lives in is shown to be very large and dark to show how evil North Korea is. This is another reason why North Korea gave Sony Pictures trouble about releasing the movie in theaters. The special effects of explosions and fight scenes are top notch.
One scene that stands out in my head is when Dave Skylark and Kim Jong Un play basketball together. They play in a stadium and only the court is lit up. All of the seats are extremely dark and try to emphasize that Kim Jong Un really isn't the "God" his citizens portray him to be. Kim Jong Un misses and dunk and falls that portrays that. A funny part of this scene is that the hoop is lowered to probably eight feet to portray that they want basketball to be easier for them. One other aspect that stood out for me was the angle of the camera. It was always kept during waist to chest height to makes them seem that they were taller than they actually are. This also tries to show the authority that the two of them have.

In conclusion, this movie is the funniest I have seen in a while and surprised me how graphic some scenes were. And it also had much more action than other comedies had. I would correlate that how Seth Rogan is a director. I would even be bold enough to say that this is James Franco's best movie yet. This movie is so funny that me and my friends have so many inside jokes of lines from the movie. Finally I give this movie five out of five stars.
I love how seth rogen, evan goldberg and that whole crew can make an incredibly stupid movie that makes such credible points at real topics.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more with you that the Seth Rogen/James Franco tandem is once again great. They play so well off each other and you can tell on screen that they really embrace/play off the whole stupid comedies sell thing which just makes the whole thing that much more funny.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see this film, too. I've heard mixed reviews, but all the buzz it got makes me intrigued. Nice job with the review. Keep up with good work and keep including a lot of specifics.
